Preparing your voyage through odyssey Odyssey User's guide...
Preparing your voyage
through odyssey
Although the site is optimized for Netscape 3.x, it is also accessible with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Equipped with your favorite browser, you’re all set to embark on this new adventure ... well, almost, that is! Unlike odyssey’s initial version that used animated GIF images, its new version uses Macromedia’s Flash technology. As a result, the animations are more sophisticated and the explanations are thus more pertinent.

Adjust your PC for optimal visualisation (optional)
Our PCs are as different as our viewing habits. It’s up to you to select the a suitable viewing mode. When it comes to resolutions and colors (256 are enough), it’s simply a question of taste..

Choosing your resolution
Click anywhere on your Windows desktop with the right mouse button. Choose Properties, then click on the Configuration tab in the Display Properties window. If your PC is in the 640 x 400 mode, slide the cursor to 800 x 600. Using this resolution will allow you to visualize the odyssey application without having to use the scroll bar to display an entire page.

Installing Authenticode 2.0 (highly recommended for Internet Explorer 3.0 users)
Just as the world evolves, so does the Web, and software publishers are continually improving on the services they offer. The Web is a real virtual boutique from which you can download all sorts of software. Authenticode 2.0 is used to identify and certify those programs which you’ll need to install on your PC.

Installation
Simply follow the instructions once the first messages appears inviting you to install Authenticode. This is the easiest way to install the program since your navigator version will be recognized automatically. Then all you’ll have to do is download the program (a little more than 400 Kb) to your PC. The file name is frauth2all.exe: be sure to run the file to ensure proper installation. If you wish to install the program without any further assistance, you may access it at the following site: http://www.microsoft.com/ie/security/?/ie/security/authentintl.htm

Installing Shockwave Flash 2.0 (required)
In order to take full advantage of odyssey’s new animations, you must first install Shockwave Flash, the software used to read them. This step will only take a few minutes and the installation is final.

Installation
Macromedia’s Flash technology is available at: http://www.macromedia.com. Once this page is displayed, simply click on the Download Shockwave Flash button. This program is particularly compact. Then follow instructions...

Capture d'écran du site de Macromedia

A few seconds later, the page will become animated, indicating that Flash has been installed on your PC (you may need to restart your browser...).

Your navigation tool is now ready to read the vectorial animation sequences specially designed for odyssey.

Warning!
The Macromedia site also allows you to download other Flash tools, including the animation development software. If you’re navigating on your own on this site, be sure to select the right Flash! The development tool’s size is roughly 4 MB will take several hours to download to your PC using a 28.800 bps modem. Should you make the wrong choice, simply click on the Cancel button.

Put your faith in Macromedia (optional)
Before running odyssey’s Flash animations, a software authentication window may appear on your screen

This is in fact a security level used by your navigation tool in order to prevent you from running an undesirable program. Which is not the case as far as Flash is concerned, and you can put your faith in Macromedia, a leader in multimedia software development..

Here’s how...
At the prompt of this authentication window, click in the appropriate box to accept Macromedia products. This way the authentification window will not appear again in the future.
