T
o complete our special report on geology, we'd like to offer our readers just a few of the adventures on the Web. This'll shake you up!

The Peak at Fournaise

Designed by Runisland, this site gives visitors a daily reading of the volcanic activity of the Peak at la Fournaise, the map of the lava flow, and photos of the famous volcano on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean.
Since 1665, when Franch explorers landed on the island, The Fournaise volcano has remained active, as this well-documented site shows.

Discover the video of the volcano in eruption (dated March 15, 1998 at 3 a.m. from the Peak of Partage).
Plus, for children of all ages, a map of the peak is available for you to download and color!

Vulcania: a futuristic center in the heart of the Auvergne region of France

The architecture of the future European Center for Volcanology will resemble a volcanic dome, the symbol of the volcanic range in the Auvergne region of France. This outdoor volcano park will be inaugurated in the year 2000. But you can already visit the scale models and the construction site on the Web.

The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906

Californians are well aware of the consequences brought about by earthquakes, and earthquake-related Web sites abound. One of the most impressive sites is dedicated to the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. This remarkable site is chock full of photographs taken at the time of the quake.

Since this terrible event, Californians have prepared themselves technically and psychologically for a seism of a much greater amplitude. Some have even gone so far as to predict the total destruction of San Francisco by the end of this century, while others seem to take earthquakes as they come, and so play with the seisms. That's what the ABAG Erathquake site offers its readers, complete with an original interactive puzzle.

The Seismic Record of the Day!

Seismic activity is an ongoing phenomenon. Caltech's Web site will give you the record of the day, statistics, diagrams, maps, and more.

Earthquake Update

Day after day, hour after hour, the University of Edinburgh's World-Wide Earthquake Locator program keeps track of all the earth's seismic movements. Select an event, an area in the world, and visualize the epicenter of an earthquake with the help of Xerox Park's Map Viewer. Check out this site to find out more on seismic activities in the world.
